Signs You Need Transmission Service

Transmission issues rarely fix themselves and can escalate quickly.
Recognizing these signs early can save you thousands in repair costs.

Slipping Gears

Black arrow pointing right.

The engine races, but the vehicle doesn't accelerate properly, or it drops out of gear while driving.

Causes: Low/burnt fluid, worn clutch packs (Automatic/Manual), band issues, or worn torque converter.

Delayed or Harsh Shifting

Black arrow pointing to the right.

A noticeable delay when shifting into Drive or Reverse, or a hard "clunk" or jerk during gear changes.

Causes: Low fluid, sensor failure (TCM/solenoids), or internal pressure issues.

Strange Noises

Black arrow pointing right.

Grinding (Manual), humming, or whining sounds. Noises that follow the gear changes often indicate internal component failure.

Causes: Bad bearings, worn gears, damaged synchronizers, or metal-to-metal contact.

Fluid Leaks (Red/Brown)

Black arrow pointing right.

Puddles of reddish or brownish fluid under your vehicle. Transmission fluid is critical for lubrication and cooling.

Causes: Leaking pan gasket, cracked lines, worn seals, or faulty drain plug.

Burning Smell (CRITICAL)

Black arrow pointing right.

Stop driving immediately. A pungent, acrid smell often means the transmission is severely overheating or the fluid is burnt.

Causes: Extremely low fluid, excessive friction from slipping, or internal damage.

Check Engine or Service Light

Black arrow pointing right.

Modern transmissions are heavily controlled by computers. A light indicates a detected fault from speed sensors, solenoids, or the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Diagnosis is required to read the specific code (P0700 series).

Preventive Maintenance: Fluid & Filter

The most cost-effective way to extend your transmission's life is routine fluid service.

Transmission Flush vs. Fluid Change

Fluid Change (Pan Drop)

Removes fluid from the pan and replaces the filter. Recommended for high-mileage or neglected transmissions.

Full System Flush

Uses specialized equipment to replace nearly 100% of the old fluid. Recommended when performed on time, as per manufacturer schedule.

CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) Service

CVTs require specific fluids and service intervals. We use only OEM-specified fluid and procedures to protect your warranty and complex belt/pulley system. Never ignore a CVT fluid change!

If internal damage is found, we provide clear options with no pressure.

Transmission Rebuild (Overhaul)

We disassemble your existing transmission, replace all damaged and worn components (gaskets, seals, clutch packs, bands), and ensure it meets factory specifications. Often the most economical option.

Remanufactured Replacement

Install a factory-built transmission that has been fully restored and tested. This option provides a quicker turnaround and usually comes with the best warranty (e.g., 3-year/100,000-mile coverage).

  • How often should I get my transmission serviced?

The interval varies greatly by vehicle type and manufacturer: typically every 30,000 to 60,000 miles for standard automatic transmissions. Always check your owner’s manual. CVTs and high-performance transmissions may require more frequent service.

  • Why is transmission fluid red?

New transmission fluid is dyed red (or sometimes green/blue for certain synthetic types like CVT) to distinguish it from motor oil (brown/black) or coolant (green/yellow/pink). If your fluid looks dark brown or black, it's burnt and needs immediate attention.

  • What is a solenoid and why is it important?

Solenoids are electro-magnetic valves controlled by the TCM. They manage the flow of transmission fluid to engage the correct clutch packs and bands. A faulty solenoid can cause hard, delayed, or improper shifting.

  • Are transmission repairs expensive?

They can be. Minor repairs like solenoid or seal replacement range from $300–$1000.

Major repairs like a rebuild or replacement typically start from $2,00 and go up. This is why preventive maintenance is so important.
